In 1970 the Container Corporation of American, a company ahead of it's time in use of recycled goods and creation of goods that could be recycled, wanted an image that could, universally represent recycled goods. They ran a contest, inviting entries from all over, and this entry by then 23 year old University of Southern California student, Gary Dean Anderson was chosen by a panel of distinguished judges. Gary won, besides lifetime bragging rights, a 2500.00 scholarship which he used to further his studies overseas. Today, 35 years later, he still has those bragging rights, although I doubt he's the bragging kind. He was quoted as saying that he was proud that the symbol has been so well accepted and is so widely and recognized around the world. The symbol was so well marketed to the world that before Trademark could be applied for, it was already popular symbol being used by companies and individuals alike. The trademark application was challenged and Container Corporation did not pursue the matter further. This symbol created by Gary Dean Anderson passed into the public domain.
