We live by a lake so have a large population of
geese in the area with few natural predators.
This fellow, however, was captured at night, and was partially
eaten and the remains
were found on the road near our house the next morning. I
had to take these pictures, since
it's a graphic representation of how man's trash can make a real
and immediately visual
Most don't find it too disturbing when geese taken
by predators, a fox, or raccoon but it is
disturbing if the goose was not given a fair chance to escape
because of human trash. This poor
goose was shackled with trash, had been for a good portion of his
life, judging by how the skin on the
legs has grown around the trash, cutting his circulation and
probably causing a life of constant pain.
Most likely, what happened this fatal night, was
that the flock was bedded down when they were
surprised by a fox, raccoon, or coyote. Disoriented by
the night, this fellow would have been,
unable to take the wide strides needed to take flight so was
caught and killed. However, his
fate was sealed long before this night!
This happens to be landscape netting, dangerous to
wild life and the environment and, in my opinion,
should be outlawed! If it used, please be aware that animals
can easily become tangled in the netting
it is exposed and it is NOT good to put down around lakes or
shorelines where baby ducks or geese
could get caught in it bad enough that it strangles their legs as
they grow!
